REVIEW: Justice League

By Matt Liew   DC’s Justice League had us waiting with bated breath. Yes, we haven’t exactly had the greatest opinion of recent DC movies (see: BvS Review & Suicide Squad Review), but we were hoping that Justice League would do better. Our spoiler-free opinions after the jump: Notable scenes shown in the trailers are funnier in the trailer than in the movie Taking a leaf out of Marvel’s page, Justice League is jam-packed with memorable & quotable moments. While being breath of fresh air for DC, Justice League had the misfortune of showing off more than half of...

Movie Review – Thor: Ragnarok (No Spoilers)

Thor: Ragnarok is a delightful brainless film by a relatively budding New Zealand director named Taika Waititi. With its bright colours and tongue in cheek humour, I can’t help but feel this is a discounted Guardians of the Galaxy. Though in truth, this movie is almost wholly Waititi’s creation and style of humour. Filled with great wit and characters burning each other with great retorts, this feels like a more sophisticated version of Guardians of the Galaxy’s humor. This actually feels like a movie that Millennials would enjoy. As a highly stylized film that sets itself apart from the...

Review: The LEGO Ninjago Movie

REVIEW: THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE The LEGO Ninjago Movie is one of those movies that you can’t help but wonder what will they come up with next. A comedy filled with laughs for the whole family, the timing luckily couldn’t be better after the awkward drought of good movies recently. With the LEGO Ninjago toys not having the biggest fandom in Malaysia prior to this movie, it still serves as a great marketing tool for the crazy journey that our main protagonist, Lloyd, undergoes. Sadly the only flaw that let’s The LEGO Ninjago Movie down, is that formulaic plot...

MOVIE REVIEW: Kingsman: The Golden Circle

I’m only appealing to my inner fanboy here. Kingsman: The Golden Circle only manages to miss the benchmark set by the first movie by 6 inches, lacking in several segments when it comes to fighting script and overall movie storytelling. The whole plot is a deserved continuation of the first one. Eggsy faces an old foe, reintroduces the cast from the previous movie, with fans following up easily as if they had seen the original. Fight scenes were well scripted, the opening chase scenes energetic and levelled as Eggsy was fighting off his opponent. However, the action wasn’t consistent...

Movie Review: It (2017)

MOVIE REVIEW: It (2017) Movie remakes tend to be a mixed bag. On one end of the spectrum, you have something that exceeds expectations like the rebooted Star Trek series (2009-present) – and then you have the disaster of a monster-lizard fest that was 1998’s Godzilla. This year’s It was something that straddled the fine line between a good reboot & a bad one – so instead of separate lists of good & bad things about the movie, here’s a combined list that shows both sides of every point: Or you could just skip to the end for the...
