Gaming was a passion of mine, it was a way of life that allowed me to bond with others. I could even say happily that it even helped me bond with my girlfriend back then. Soon though, work started to take away those fun times with old friends. With gaming slowly and nearly completely being phased out as none of us really had time. Life, responsibilities and my commitment to my loving family and adorable children had become the most important thing to me.
Now I never really gave up gaming completely, I will still find an hour or two to relax and unwind whenever there was time. Yet, I could never really try out any of the newer games with my current and past work laptops. So when I was told that I would be playing games for ‘work’ on a gaming laptop from HP, under the gamer specific Omen series, I didn’t hesitate. With a giant smile on my face that my coworkers wouldn’t stop bugging me about, I felt this nostalgic sense of joy and excitement. Nothing beats playing games with others in a LAN environment. The shouting and excitement over every clutch play, the tension and wanting that rematch is unbeatable.
As someone who has never gamed on a 17” gaming laptop, the Omen by HP 17 was an interesting experience. I’m used to all the old games likes Red Alert 2, Classic Dota and games from the Black Isle Studios, and I felt slightly overwhelmed with how far gaming has come. I must also say that gaming on the large 17-inch screen of the Omen by HP 17 was pretty darn awesome. It does also help that they told me the laptop contains a Nvidia GTX 1070, which even I know is some great hardware for gaming. Enjoying that fantastically smooth 120hz 1080p monitor, I found myself fully immersed in the gaming session that day. I wonder how my colleague’s experience on the Omen by HP 15 was like, but you’d have to ask her.

Saying goodbye to my work laptop for the day, I said hello to the bliss that is 16GB DDR4 RAM and a fast Intel Chip, the i7-7700HQ. Let’s just say that having the chance to turn up the graphic settings on newer game titles was something I sorely missed. Truly possessing and using a gaming system that pushes out such great performance only made the grin on my face larger.
So to get me started again, my coworkers decided that with my background in Counter Strike and Team Fortress, I should play one of the biggest up and coming competitive shooter out there today – Overwatch.
Jumping straight into the Overwatch with no tutorials or explanations, thanks guys, we then proceeded to film some of our 1v1 duels. In what I could only say was an obvious unfair matchup, I actually almost beat Jeremy. Now if I hadn’t have fallen off the map twice, I would have easily beaten him.
Jokes aside, Overwatch was a very fast paced and enjoyable game for me. With no noticeable fps drops or tearing on the highest settings on the Omen by HP 17. I could really savour every moment, even if it ended in my defeat.
Sadly, with all those defeats, it really just comes down to myself being out of touch with current gaming trends for so long. I couldn’t even use the old typical excuse of hardware or lag issues. I even wanted to blame the laptop keyboard, but I was actually pleasantly surprised with the feel. I generally despise most laptop keyboards, but this one didn’t feel cramped at all – it feels just right for me.
The heat management I should also mention was really well executed on the Omen by HP 17, as it was completely devoid of those random, crazy hand-burning hot-spots that laptop gamers should be familiar with. With the multiple fan setup for cooling, it seems that the laptop is kept at a comfortable and usable temperature.
For last ditch attempt to beat Jeremy at something, we proceeded to try some Dota 2 and again I was surprised to be playing a game at above 100FPS on ultra setting. Sadly yet again, I was defeated easily in a 1v1 solo mid showdown, yet it sparked something in me. That competitiveness to be the best, that feeling if wanting to experience that tension again, I wanted it all back!
At the end of my review session, my colleagues asked if I felt like a gamer reborn. All I could tell them at the end of the day when they took back the laptop was this:
“Of course not! If I were given an Omen by HP 17, then yes, I would feel like a gamer reborn.”-Govind Raj
