Malaysians waited, fixated on their screens in the wee hours of the morning for Eva Longoria to pass the honor of announcing this year’s prestigious Puskas Awards to Brazil legend Ronaldo, and were rewarded for their patience. Without haste, the former Inter Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid forward announced Mohd Faiz Subri as the rightful winner of this year’s award.
The Penangite, who walked to the stage with a neat tuxedo, instead of the rumored baju melayu and tengkolok, looked ecstatic as he took his time to switch his phone on to deliver his speech. Faiz got the chance to thank his team, family, friends and all Malaysians for voting and supporting him throughout the journey. He also enjoyed the prize-giving ceremony as he took pictures with legends Sir Alex Ferguson, Roberto Carlos, and Cristiano Ronaldo – surely a dream come true for a local boy who grew up watching the greats on a small TV screen.
Faiz Subri won it big against the two other nominees for goal of the year as he earned 59% more votes than Daniuska Rodriguez and Marlone to clinch the title.
The 29-year old scored a stunning free-kick against Pahang that saw the ball curve abruptly in an almost impossible manner that shocked the footballing world last year. Faiz, who plays for Penang, is a player with calibre who can win matches and is well deserving of the award.
