TTDI, 15th June 2017 :- No stranger to the tech game, Lenovo held a launch event in order to introduce its customers to the new ThinkPad P51s workstation. They also availed of that opportunity to reveal its new line of a refreshed range of commercial products which contain one of the latest computer processing unit – the Kaby Lake 7th Generation Intel Core i7 Processor.

Being an outsider to the tech world, this event was a personal Turing Test. If I could understand all this technical talk, I’d give it a pass. Fair enough, Mr. Jason Wong, Business Manager of Lenovo Workstations in Lenovo Malaysia took to the stage during the event and gave an in depth analysis of the event’s main star – the new ThinkPad P51s Workstation. I’d say whilst the presentation was a tad drone-y, I could understand it all.  Basically the jist is that this is a workhorse computer that can run 4K videos, solidly built with military-specification testing and is truly a business ultrabook.

It has all the ribbons and bows of a good functioning workstation, from Intel’s latest Core i7 processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM that can be upgradeable to 32GB and a NVIDIA Quadro M520M 2GB graphics card. As for storage space, it comes with a 512GB PCIE NVME OPAL solid state drive. Loading software and boot times should be amazing.

Now looking at the workstation in person, I’d say that it provides a brilliant display – boy, even when standing perpendicular to the edge of the screen I could see what was in front of me. You can have all that, with either the FHD IPS in 250 nits or 4K UHD IPS with 300 nits option. There is a catch though, at the moment Malaysia only has the FHD model for sale.

Lenovo always knows how to play the light touch to their advantage – thinking of the finer details their competitor might leave out. With curved keyboard keys, Lenovo’s SmartBeep technology and highly insulated power cords – they leave your future workstation comfortable to touch to protect your laptop against the black screen of death and of course, overcharging.

To wrap it all up, this workstation is a one size fits all in terms of functionality. Coming in at almost 2 kilograms, however, it is a tad on the heavier side – considering that you’ve yet to fit in your power cord, additional mouse or whatever else you might want to stuff in your duffel bag.

If you think that it is a good fit however, it is on sale from mid-July 2017 from selected Lenovo authorised resellers at RM6,999.
