The Level recently received an email from a reader, one Aswad M., regarding a piece he wrote on the website Medium, a self-publishing platform, has become popular as a place for netizens to discuss heated and sometimes controversial issues, and Aswad appears to have followed in this tradition in penning a piece titled ‘Manchester, Marawi, Jakarta: Moderate Muslims, hear me out!’.

First discussing the recent terrorist attack in Manchester, England and comparing it to his own travel plans later this year, Aswad outlines an impassioned plea to moderate Muslims to stand up to extremism. It’s certainly a controversial piece, calling Malaysian Muslims “hypocrites” among other things, but does make several good points worth talking about. While Malaysia has been largely quiet, there has been plenty of news over the past few years regarding growing extremism at home, and the question of whether or not we are doing anything to truly address the problem becomes apparent.
