Singapore-based mixed martial arts promotion ONE FC is set to break boundaries with the upcoming ONE Championship: Ascent to Power PPV event this 6th May 2016.
Undefeated Singaporean fighter Angela Lee will be taking on Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi for the first ever women’s championship in the promotion, and we can’t wait to see these two women cross fists in the cage. Yamaguchi, 33, has a 15-8 record and fights out of Tokyo, Japan, and is a karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter who debuted in 2007 at Smackgirl-F 2007: The Next Cinderella Tournament 2007 First Stage, while her opponent, Lee, is a 19-year old undefeated sensation with a 5-0 record. An Evolve MMA team member, Lee has finished all her five fights via submission, including a show-stopping Twister crank that won her fight with Natalie Gonzalez Hills.
Women’s MMA has surged in popularity over the past few years, with Ronda Rousey at its forefront armbarring her opponents into mainstream relevance. Lee and Yamaguchi will become the standard bearers for a new generation of Asian female fighters, and whichever one of these women lifts the belt at the end of the fight, it will be well deserved.
