Samsung has just released its new flagships, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, fixing the drawbacks and improving upon the S9’s strengths. It’s quite essentially the S8, but better. Lots better. Highlights of the new phone include a redesigned dual lens camera, featuring two different apertures, fitted with an enhanced low light sensor, Super Slow-mo video capabilities, capable of recording up to 960 FPS and the ability to have personalised AR Emoji, like Apple’s Animoji. Bixby too has been given a buff, enabling users to get real time translation and currency conversions just by pointing the camera at said text or picture, and browse everyday items with extreme ease.
Stereo speakers have been introduced to the mix, with drivers tuned by AKG, ensuring consistent audio quality from listening to music, streaming movies, or playing Mobile Legends. The speakers too support Dolby Atmos, giving the S9 the ability to recreate 360-degree sound. Display is still the same as the S8, the same gorgeous Infinity Display providing clean and crisp picture quality that blends in with the phone.
Samsung is pushing its concept of a do it all phone, and both the S9 and S9+ have SmartThings app embedded inside, connecting all Samsung and non-Samsung electronic devices. DeX has been beefed up in terms of ease of connectivity to the DeX Pad, allowing users to connect their phone to a larger monitor, keyboard and mouse to expand the mobile experience. The DeX Pad also includes a neat party trick, allowing the S9 to be turned into a trackpad if desired.
IP68 rating for water and dust resistance come standard on both phones, as well as SD card support for expansion up to 400GB. Biometric options have been increased, allowing users to be identified by either iris, fingerprint, or facial recognition, or a combination of facial and iris scans for a more speedy unlock.
The optical sensor to track your health stats has also been given a good dose of steroids, built directly into the phone. Much like how 3D is a step up from 2D, the sensor allows not just a standard heart rate monitoring, but also Heart Load Factor, measuring real time demand placed on the heart as well.
However, the most significant change Samsung has made to the the S9 is repositioning the fingerprint scanner from the side, to the bottom of the camera. Absolutely revolutionary.
16th of March is the release date for Samsung’s latest offerings, with the S9 priced at RM 3299, all the way to RM 4399 for the top range S9+ 256gb. Colours available are Coral Blue, Midnight Black, and Lilac Purple.
