Microsoft expands its range of products for the Surface family in Malaysia. We finally get the much anticipated Surface Book 2 on the 15th March and the Surface Laptop, which is already available at authorized retailers.
The Surface Book 2, a great ultra-thin 2-in-1 laptop, is a nice machine that will pack a punch, to your wallet. Coming in at RM6,899, this 13.5” base variants comes only with an Intel i5 7th gen, Intel HD Graphics 620, 256GB SSD, and 8GB of RAM. Only by moving up to the next tier, do we get the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. A much more interesting prospect, this model has an Intel i7 8th gen like the base model for RM8,899.
Definitely on the pricey side, you still can’t help oogle at the beauty of the Surface Book 2. The all magnesium alloy body and finally a USB Type-C port, no thunderbolt sadly, make this a nifty gadget, if you got the money. The hinge, a technical feat of beauty, and its lightweight design makes carrying this around fun for all occasions. Even the attachment/detachment system for the screen makes a satisfying click. I mean, this is an obvious eye candy that I would love to have.
All the Surface Book 2s will have two USB 3.1 type A, one USB type c and a SD card reader built into the keyboard/dock. Which I might add, has a satisfying click when it disengages into tablet mode.
Yet upgrading the Surface Book 2, won’t be cheap. The 13.5” model can be upgraded to 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM for RM11,199 and RM13,999 for the 1TB SSD and 16GB variant. As for the bigger cousin, the 15” Surface Book 2, you get a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, Intel i7 8th gen, 256GB SSD, and 8GB of RAM for RM10,799. The 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM variant will cost you RM12,499 and an additional RM1,700 for the 1TB SSD and 16GB variant (RM 14,199).
Now, it should be mentioned that there is a potential worrying issue with the Surface Book 2 15” with the GTX 1060. Apparently the power adapter can’t charge the computer fast enough when under full load. This means, even when plugged it, be it running games or heavy video editing, this thing will slowly drain power and eventually throttle itself, funs! What we would say is just make sure that there is a return policy and do test out the computer under your normal load within said period. As for the 13.5” model of the Surface Book 2, there is no known similar issues and should be able to play games or do video editing just fine, albeit a bit slower or at lower quality and resolution.
Now for the second product, the Surface Laptop, this is essentially the clamshell version of the Surface Pro, includes the Alcantara keyboard material. With a potential 14.5 hours of battery life, this touch screen laptops comes in at around 1.25 kilograms and is less than 14.5mm thick. Just don’t expect to detach the screen on this one like the Surface Pro or Surface Book 2.
