This is for all of you indie-psych heads! Made possible by Upfront and Original Matters, Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be holding their first ever KL live show this 25th of September at The Bee, Publika. Haven’t heard of them? Well it’s never too late to give it a listen! You might end up becoming a fan.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra began as a modest bedroom recording project by Ruban Nielson in 2010. After recording several songs and posting them online anonymously, Nielson signed to Fat Possum Records and released his self-titled debut “Unknown Mortal Orchestra” in 2011 to some critical acclaim and success. A back-breaking tour schedule gave birth to the more complex and troubled sophomore album “II” which was released on Jagjaguwar records in 2012 and saw the band become a favourite live act on the indie scene. One of my favourite songs from them called “So Good At Being In Trouble” is from this album as well. In 2015, Nielson released the album “Multi-Love”, which told the story of a polyamorous relationship and brought them a greater profile.
In early 2016, the band began working on ‘Sex & Food’, the album that pushed them for this tour. The recording process followed Ruban across the globe on a quest for creative inspiration. From Seoul and Hanoi to Reykjavik, Mexico City, and Auckland, it was a distant journey out of his usual home recording setting back in Oregon. The band describes the album as “questioning where are we headed, what we are consuming, how is it affecting us, and why does everything feel so bad and weird sometimes?”, exactly why I love them, and I’m sure I’ve got the support of troubled millennials behind my back.
