Spoken word poetry has existed for many years and it’s an oral art form that emphasizes on word play, intonation and voice inflection. It essentially encompasses all kinds of poetry that is recited aloud, including poetry slams and prose monologues. Like music, spoken poetry appeals to the ear, inducing an effect known as onomatopoeia. Spoken word poetry reached Malaysia somewhere during the early 2010. The community of spoken word enthusiasts in Malaysia is still relatively small, but with spoken word events like ‘If Walls Could Talk’ and the ones organized by Poetry Café KL, the community is slowly building up.
Whether you’re new or a veteran, everybody is welcomed to Oral Fixation, a monthly platform where everyone is welcomed to perform spoken word pieces or other forms of poetry. Performances aren’t only limited to spoken word, monologues from plays, poetry recitals, Shakespeare lines and the lot are also eligible. The KL Journal Edition of Oral Fixation has free entry and is open to the public and patrons of the hotel. Register at http://bit.ly/oralfixationsw if you’d like to perform.
Featured acts include Jamal Raslan, who is an established spoken word poet based in Kuala Lumpur. He has been featured on TEDxKL and is an artist with MOCA fest under the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF). He released his EP “The Word” in 2011 at the Georgetown Literary Festival and was published in Malchin Testaement: Malaysian Poems. Other performers will be announced soon.
