Florida-born rising young rapper, Xxxtentacion was shot dead in Deerfield Beach, Florida on June 18, 2018. He was 20 years old at the time of the shooting. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department, two armed suspects ran up to his car after Onfroy was leaving a motorcycle dealership in South Florida this afternoon. In what appears to be an armed robbery, one of the suspects shot Onfroy and drove off in an SUV. He was then rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 4:51 PM.

Born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, Xxxtentacion began his musical journey after being released from a youth correction center. Through his SoundCloud account, he released his first song titled “News/Flock”. He was a popular name in SoundCloud rap, which is a music genre that is generally characterized by its simple lo-fi beat and lyrics. In December 2015, he released what would become his breakout hit, “Look at Me!” His popularity in the SoundCloud rap scene brought his name into the mainstream, resulting in the release of his debut album in August 2017. Songs like “Sad” and “Changes” from his second album titled “?”, peaked at numbers seven and 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively.

Despite his skyrocketing success, his career has been tampered with cases of domestic violence, aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and domestic battery by strangulation. However, his death is still mourned by his supporters, even inciting obituaries from artists like Kanye West and J. Cole, as well as his fans across the globe.
